My most memorable hunt to-date

On my first elephant hunt in Mozambique as an apprentice PH we had tracked a group of 4 bull elephants for 5 hours until we found them standing under a big marula tree in the mid day shade, with their bums against each other as if they were ready for battle! They had no idea that we were sitting on a pile of rocks 40 meters from them downwind. The professional hunter in charge of the hunt said that it would be suicide to shoot one of them while they were bunched up like that and suggested to the client that we sit and wait until they start feeding and moving away. This would also give him time to decide which elephant to shoot.
An hour and a half later it started to cool down and they slowly began to move and the PH signaled that it was time to move in for the shot. Normally it would only be the client and the Professional Hunter, but it was my lucky day as the client said he had no problem with me stalking behind them. We were on the bull's tail for about 5 minutes, walking alongside some of the other bulls which was really intense for me as a first timer. The bull we were after suddenly slowed down for no apparent reason and within a split second turned around and charged us at full speed with ears folded back! What seemed like minutes happened in a couple of seconds, I was un-armed and put my faith in my PH as I did not have much faith in the client as he had missed a kudu the day before at 20 yards. The client fired and the bull came down at 6 paces. I was under the impression the PH had fired but in the end our new friend stood his ground and proved himself. The bull wasn’t the biggest of beasts and weighed in at 51 lbs per side which in most people’s eyes is a good tusker, the client who had hunted 10 jumbos before said there was no better hunting experience than shooting a charging bull elephant! Thinking back to that hunt to this day still makes my hair stand up.
