Physical Characteristics:

Spotted deer are a medium sized deer. Males weigh about 150-200lbs+, females are about 80lbs+. Very similar in size to a Whitetail deer. The males however sport very large antlers, which are very pretty. Females do not grown antlers. In their native habitat Spotted deer prefer scrub jungle or secondary forest, with open glades, grass, young vegetation and water. Their name "Spotted deer" comes from their spotted markings which both genders display. They are one of the prettiest deer species of the world.
Spotted deer are herd animals and in the wild, very large herds of over a hundred animals were sometimes encountered in days past. Herds of fifteen or more animals is very common.

Distribution:
|
Native to India, where it is known as the "chital," the axis deer was introduced into Texas about 1932. In 1988, free-ranging herds were established in 27 counties of central and southern Texas. Axis deer are the most abundant exotic ungulate in Texas.
In North America they can be hunted on several private ranches in Texas, Florida and other states.

Hunting Method:

Spot and stalk or watching over water and food sources are a good way to hunt Spotted deer.

The Shot:
|
As with most deer species a heart or lung shot is recommended.
|

Calibers:
|
The 270 Winchester upwards would be the perfect caliber.

Ammunition:
|
Any soft nose bullet will suffice. They are however tough animals and will go a long distance if the vitals are not hit.

Selecting a Trophy:
|
A mature male with a dark throat and long antlers make a good trophy.
|
|
Taxidermy:
|
A shoulder and even a full mount makes a very pretty mount. A rug made from a large male or even several spotted deer skins is spectacular.

Florida and Texas in North America.
