April 21, 2010 Yesterday the U.S. Supreme Court, in an 8-1 decision, struck down a law that banned the distribution of depictions of animal cruelty. Hunting and SCI’s contribution to the briefing played an important role in the court’s decision. Although the law was intended to stop the distribution of “crush videos,” its broad language could have been used to prosecute the distribution of hunting videos or magazines. The Supreme Court ruled the law unconstitutional, holding that the law’s expansive prohibitions could affect activities protected under the First Amendment. Safari Club International and the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation submitted an amicus curiae brief explaining the harmful impact the law imposed on hunting and the hunting community. Chief Justice Roberts quoted SCI’s brief in discussing hunting videos, and the role that hunting videos play in enhancing hunting enjoyment, opportunities and recruitment. WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Barack Obama signed a Presidential Memorandum establishing the America’s Great Outdoors Initiative to promote and support innovative community-level efforts to conserve outdoor spaces and to reconnect Americans to the outdoors. The European Union Commission recently released a new air-travel security regulation which, in part, prohibits the carriage of ammunition in checked baggage. This new regulation could make it very difficult for hunters to leave Europe with ammunition and might even cause problems for travelers transiting through Europe with ammunition, on their way to non-European destinations. Individual EU countries have the ability to opt out of the regulation, and SCI is working to encourage as many countries as possible to do so in their national air safety rules. SCI is also working to clarify whether the regulation will affect hunters who must fly through Europe, such as those who simply change planes in a European airport. This regulation goes into effect on April 29, so anyone travelling with ammunition through Europe after that date needs to contact the airline to make sure that there will not be any issues. SCI argued that hunting should be maintained to help control mammals (e.g., pigs, goats and deer) that harm the plants. In the recent listing and critical habitat designation for these species, the Fish and Wildlife Service acknowledged “that game mammal hunting is a highly valued activity to a portion of the present-day Hawaiian culture, and that hunting is an important tool to manage wild game populations” and said it “supports hunting as a recreational activity.” The Service also explained that the critical habitat designation does not affect bird and mammal hunting. Scott O'Konek’s 32-point, non-typical buck harvest may be a Minnesota archery record, the Star Tribune reports. O’Konek, 29, made the 44 yard shot during the first of two Camp Ripley archery hunts last week at about 9 a.m. "I was shaking," he said. "I didn't know what to do. I sat there in my stand and said, 'Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh.'" O’Konek of South Haven climbed out of his tree stand and examined the buck for 45 minutes taking the day’s events all in while he admired the deer. "I would have shot a doe, had I seen a doe," O’Konek, who shoots his bow 300 days a year, said. "I don't want to make too much out of this 'big buck' thing. Bow hunting is important to me. It makes me calm. If I see a red squirrel or a bird fly by, it makes my day. This was a bonus. It's the stuff we dream about as hunters." The buck scored a preliminary 228, but the score will be finalized after 60 days when the antlers have dried. The state’s current archery record is held by a buck killed in 1989 with a score of 225 according to the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association. Officials estimated the deer to be about 5-years-old and weighed in at 192-pounds. "It looks like an elk," Lou Cornicelli, Department of Natural Resources big game coordinator, said. "It's weird to see all of those points coming off other points." O’Konek initially thought he counted 37 points on the buck, and said he called his wife Susan, also a hunter, to tell her of his trophy kill. O’Konek said his wife didn’t believe him. Both O’Konek and his wife had been hunting before on Camp Ripley’s 53,000 acres. "Bow hunting runs in my family and in Susan's family," O'Konek said. "Susan's 70-year-old grandmother, Karen Cleveland, has been out four times already this year."

As of Oct. 20, hunters have taken 326 moose during the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department reports. Moose hunting season dates began on Oct. 17 though today and again on Oct. 24 through Nov. 1. Nearly 14,000 people applied for one of the state’s 1,225 lottery-drawn moose hunting permits. "This is Vermont's 17th year of moose hunting in modern times," Fish & Wildlife Commissioner Wayne Laroche said. "The moose management program is based on an active management strategy intended to keep the population in balance with available habitat and maintain it at a socially acceptable level. Moose hunting permits were available for 1,230 hunters this year, and about 600 moose are expected to be taken during the carefully regulated hunt."

Information for hunters going to Zimbabwe Zimbabwe is still keeping on and the season has been reasonable considering the effect of the Global Recession on clients’ ability to fund an African Hunting Trip. However, we hear that there are definite signs of the recession turning around, so by the start of the hunting season 2010 we expect that many of our regular clients who may have skipped 2009, will be back again. Whatever happens, we shall still be here anyway! I have to advise that there has now been a 2% levy added to the cost by the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (quasi-government). This will now mean that there will be a 2% levy on both the Daily Rate and the Trophies you take. Previously it was only on the Daily Rate. The 2% charge on Trophy fees charged by National Parks for the export documents still stands and is separate to that charged by ZTA. We wanted to advise you of this so that you will not think it is the Operator who is raising his cost. These are government body levies.
