Although I've fished most of my life, I have never caught a "trophy" fish.  The largest largemouth bass I ever caught was about 2-3 lbs while camping near the Holly River in WV.  I am more of a "poke-n-hope" kind of fisherwoman.  I just try my best and not worry about all the specifics.  Have nailed a large bluegill too.  I've never been big on eating the fish I catch, I release them so someone else can enjoy them too.  Going fishing again on the Holly in May...wish me luck!
